Reels, Shorts, TikTok Drama, Micro Drama… Everybody is using three terminology for the format. I love to describe them as “soap operas for the smartphones”.For a more serious definition;A vertical drama refers to a narrative that is specifically created and formatted to be viewed on mobile devices in a vertical (portrait) orientation. This format is a direct response to the increasing dominance of mobile platforms in everyday media consumption.Micro dramas, also known as “duanju” in Chinese, typically consist of episodes ranging from 90 seconds to two minutes long. They initially gained popularity in China after capitalizing on the short-form video trend from other short-video apps in the country.Vertical dramas are ultra-short, serialized stories designed for quick consumption. Unlike traditional TV shows or web series, they cut straight to the emotional core, packing intense plot twists, cliffhangers, and character arcs into tiny episodes. How did it begin?I think the core element is the revolution of the Smartphone. The smartphone usage continues to increase.See content credentialsPeople are turning to their phones as their main access tool to entertainment.According to statistics, people spend nearly 7 hours a day on screens. Some milestones about verticals trying to show something to us;On Verticals, Snapchat was one of the oldest in creating mobile content. Then Instagram Stories followed. TikTok, and YouTube Shorts are the last vertical benders who capitalize on the short-form, vertical trend. These platforms thrive on short bursts of entertainment. Influencers and creators started to produce vertical content. Vertical dramas fit seamlessly into their ecosystems. Why audiences love them?– Instant Gratification—No long intros or filler scenes—just fast, engaging storytelling.-Offering a quick mental escape for the audience.– Perfect for Mobile Viewing—Ideal for commutes, quick breaks, or late-night binge sessions.– Highly Shareable—Easy to repost, react to, and discuss on social media.– Diverse Genres – From romance and thriller to comedy and horror, there’s something for everyone. Bite sized…A cross between TikTok and Netflix, micro-dramas are mini soap operas designed for the smartphone generation. Episodes are filmed in a vertical format and last just over a minute each. The acting tends to be histrionic, the storylines often absurd, with titles like “I accidentally re-married with my ex-billionaire husband”.But the bite-sized sagas are perfect for China’s young working professionals: long commutes and grueling schedules leave little time for binge-watching box-sets on the sofa. Catering to their fragmented viewing habits, these shows rake in millions of views—and millions of dollars. In 2025 they will extend their reach, attracting more viewers outside China. What are the Essentials ?Breaking into vertical dramas requires a combination of creativity, understanding of the format, and a willingness to adapt to the demands of mobile storytelling.Traditional scripts for television or film typically follow a three-act structure, with a clear beginning, middle, and end. Vertical dramas, on the other hand, often feature shorter, faster-paced narratives.DramapopsWriters prioritize hooks that instantly grab and sustain the audience's attention within a limited time frame. Characters need to be quickly introduced, and story arcs must be succinct and impactful. The vertical format also encourages more dynamic, visually compelling storytelling that makes use of the unique framing to create intimacy and focus. Leverage Short-Form Content: Writers must be adept at delivering concise, impactful dialogue and visual cues that convey information quickly. Writing scripts that are under 10 minutes long are a good way to practice and refine these skills. 1. Grab Attention in the First 3 SecondsWith endless content competing for eyeballs, your opening shot must be bold, emotional, or shocking. Think: a breakup, a betrayal, or a life-or-death moment.2. Keep It Short & High-EnergyEvery second counts—trim unnecessary dialogue and focus on visual storytelling.3. Use Strong Music & Cinematic TechniquesSince episodes are brief, background scores, close-up shots, and dramatic lighting amplify the impact.4. End with a CliffhangerThis makes viewers want to watch the next episode. A sudden twist, unanswered question, or looming threat keeps them coming back. What’s going to be next on Verticals Universe?I realized that Samsung had launched a vertical TV named “The Sero” on 2019. Smells futuristic! Vertical content may challenge the idea of TV being a static, at-home experience.Entrepreneurs had already been invested to this new format all around the world; there are approximately 350 short drama app in the market on October 2025. Drama wise, as already known Turkiye is one of the biggest Media/TV (especially drama) show importers between USA, South Korea.
